Ions are charged species. Together with counterions of opposite charge, they can form compounds. Polyatomic ions are charged species that consist of more than one atom. They too need counterions to form compounds.

Just as ions are formed when neutral atoms gain or lose electrons, a polyatomic ion is formed when a neutral molecule gains or loses electrons.
