If any user wishes to connect to some other user, within the same box, then by simple dialing he would be ableto do so. This is the case ofLocal Calls. In case of the wired base phone, callswithin the same telephone exchange are Local Calls. Those who have used it, might remember that while dialing any local number, no area codes were required. In the case of wireless telephony, this exchange is replaced bya series of switches androuters placed in a specific area (called telecom circles, in India) . Calls in the same circle are local just like in the Wired Phones. Now consider the scenario forSTD calls. There are of course multiple exchanges serving different geographic areas (A, B and C in the below picture). These all exchanges are connected to each other. What if some user from A wanted to connect to another user, who is connected to B. Then, if you remember, we usedto dial the area code before phone number. That is STD call.
