All engines can be called machines, but not all machines can be called engines. 

Simply put machine is an assembly of various components, put together to perform one or more function(s), stapler for example, is a machine.





Whereas, Engine represents a class of machines which burns fuel (solid/liquid/gaseous) to release the energy stored within the fuel. The energy thus released undergoes series of transformation, before it can be utilized to do some useful work. Gas turbine is one such example of an internal combustion engine.
