Difference between methylcobalamin and mecobalamin:
- Methylcobalamin and mecobalamin are the same thing.
- Methylcobalamin is the long form of mecobalamin. They are the scientific name of Vitamin B 12.
- They both have a methyl group attached to the cobalt of cobalamin. In case of cyanocobalamin a cyano group is attached to the cobalamin.
- Vitamin B12 deficiency result in a variety of diseases like pernicious anaemia, Crohn's disease, atrophic gastritis.
- Vitamin B12 absorption is associated with the castles intrinsic factor. Some drugs is associated with the absorption of vitamin B12 like pantroprazole, cetrizine etc.

Methylcobalamin (Mecobalamin):
- Mecobalamin is short form of methylcobalamin which is physiologically equivalent to vitamin B₁₂.
- It has octahedral cobalt (III) at the centre and it obtained as brightly red crystals.
- It is used to cure pathology that are caused due to deficiency of vitamin B₁₂ which includes diabetic neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy.
- In laboratory, it is produced by reducing cyanocobalamin with sodium borohydride in presence of methyl iodide. Naturally, it is produced by a bacteria.
- In environment, it help in biomethylation of heavy metals.
