The difference between Newtonian and Cassegrain telescope is that in Newtonian telescope, a diagonal mirror reflects lights. On the other hand, in a  Cassegrain telescope a secondary mirror reflects light.

  • Both, Newtonian and Cassegrain telescopes, are a kind of reflecting telescopes.
  • When comparing the structure, a Newtonian telescope uses a diagonal mirror for reflecting light.
  • A Cassegrain telescope has a secondary mirror which reflects light back to the primary mirror.
  • Newtonian telescopes are faster whereas Cassegrain telescope are slower telescopes.
  • Newtonian telescopes are a little cheaper as compared to Cassegrain telescope of the same size.
  • Another difference between  Newtonian and Cassegrain telescope is that a Newtonian telescope has a larger telescope tube whereas a Cassegrain telescope has a shorter telescope tube.
  • A Newtonian telescope is best for widefield visual observations whereas a Cassegrain telescope is best for planetary observations.
