A closed circuit allows the electric current to pass through. Switch or key is turned on to make the circuit closed.
Whereas, in an open circuit switch or key is in off position. Thus, it doesn't allow the electric current to pass through the circuit.

When key is open the can't pass through wire but when key is closed current pass through wire.
