What happens when you displace a swing from it's position of rest ? It starts moving from one side of the rest position to the other and back. It keeps oscillating between the two extreme positions, moving back and forth. This repeated back and forth movement about the rest position is called oscillatory motion.

When a body moves along a straight line, it is said to be linear or rectilinear motion.
A car moving along a straight road, a train moving on straight track, a child going down to a slide, an arrow shot from a bow, a group of marching soldiers and a ball dropped from a height are all examples of linear motion.

Hope this helps you !!!

The main difference is that oscillatory motion is always periodic but aperiodic motion may or may not beoscillatory motion. For example, themotion of a pendulum is bothoscillatory motion and periodic motionbut the motion of the wheels of a car is only periodic because the wheels rotate in a circular motion.
