osmosis is the movement of water molecules from high water potential to a lower water potential across a semipermeable membrane whereas plasmolysis is the shrinkage of a cell due to the persisting movement of the water molecules out of the cell. Plasma membrane serves as the semipermeable membrane during osmosis. The two types of osmosis are endosmosis and exosmosis. Plasmolysis occurs due to persisting exosmosis.
