DEFINITION : The process by which digested food is oxidised to release energy is called respiration.

                           Respiration :

  • Respiration is a complex process during which digested food is oxidised to release chemical energy.

  • It is a biochemical process and takes place inside the cell.

  • It involves a series of reactions, all of them catalyzed by specific enzymes.

  • The energy released is stored in the ATP molecules.

  • Respiration occurs in 2 phases

a) Breathing or external respiration.

b) Internal or tissue respiration.

                           Breathing :

  • Breathing is simply exchange of gases in which an organism takes in oxygen from the environment and gives out carbon dioxide.

  • It is a physical or mechanical process involving inhalation or exhalation.

  • Different organisms have different organs for breathing.

For eg : fish breathe by gills and land animals by nostrils and lungs.
