A seismograph is a device which records the signal generated by earth during any seismic activity whereas Richter scale is the measure of the “strength (size)” of an earthquake (which varies from 1 to 10). It is a logarithmic scale which is an indication of the amplitude of seismic waves. It is also called as “Magnitude scale” because of the fact that it is an indication of magnitude of seismic waves. An earthquake of Ml 4 is 10 times larger in size than an earthquake of Ml 3. Please note that the Ritcher scale does not indicate the intensity of an earthquake. To measure intensity, the Mercalli scale is used. “Intensity” of an earthquake is different from “Strength” of an earthquake.
