Difference between Sexual and Asexual reproduction in plants?

Characteristics

Asexual reproduction

Sexual Reproduction

1. Parents involved

IN ASEXUAL=Only one

IN SEXUAL=One  or two
___________________
2. Units of  reproduction

IN ASEXUAL=Vegetative cells or spores

IN SEXUAL= Sex cells or gametes
______________________________
3. Fusion of gametes

IN ASEXUAL= Not involved

IN SEXUAL=Involved
_________________________

4. Offsprings

IN ASEXUAL=Genetic makeup of offsprings

IN SEXUAL= same as parent
____________________________

Offsprings show variations due to recombination of genetic characters
_____________________________

5. Role in life cycle

IN ASEXUAL=Rapid multiplication in number
and perpetuation of same generation

IN SEXUAL=Results in change of generation from haploid to diploid.

6. Meiosis

IN ASEXUAL=Not always necessary

IN SEXUAL= Always  necessary

7. Significance

IN ASEXUAL=Useful in maintaining the purity of crop characters and vegetative propagation of economically important crops.

IN SEXUAL=Useful in plant breeding and crop improvement; plays a key role in organic evolution by genetic recombination and variations.
