A Landscape is usually painted Plein Air or outside. It is usually wider than it is high unless it is a city-scape. It uses natural light. Plein Air; denoting or in the manner of a 19th-century style of painting outdoors, or with a strong sense of the open air, that became a central feature of French impressionism.

A Portrait is usually taller than it is wide and is a picture of a person or animal, posed in natural or artificial light.
