Registeration means in short signing up for a software institution. But Product activation is mainly paid. Registration means giving needed personal info to a product developer and marking the user's name in institution, whereas activation means one mainly needs to pay some amount of money to the developer for taking the full benefit of the product

Eg - Registering on Microsoft or signingup for a microsoft account.

But when we download windows 10 (latest downloadable OS) it is not activated, so we can use windows 10's various features such as taskbar customiszation, but after activation of windows 10 (product) we can use all the features.
