Plateau is a large landmass with a considerable elevation from sea level , just like a table and hence it is also called tableland whereas when a piece of land is covered by water from three sides and not four like an island , it is said to be a Peninsula. Both of these happen to be typical landforms of second order in the hierchy of landforms.

Here is your answer
They are different types of geographical formation. Mountains are land which has been pushed and squeezed together by one piece of crust pushing against each other. The edges crumple rather like an aluminium can does when you crush it. The squeezed crust folds over itself and is pushed out of the way upwards as there is no other escape route.
Peninsulas can be formed in 3 ways:-
by the rise or fall of sea levelscovering or exposing portions of land
.the fall or uplift of landmass separation of landmasses over millions of years
