Apparent Expansion means the thermal expansion of a liquid as measured in a graduated container without allowance for the expansion of the container. The real expansion of the liquid = Apparent expansion of the liquid + Volume expansion of the container..

SOLID

Expansion is the tendency of a substance to change their volume, due to increased temperature. When a solid is heated, their molecules move farther apart and due to this the solid expands and occupy more space. The thermal expansion of a solid is described in terms of change in length, height or thickness.

LIQUID

Expansion is the tendency of a substance to change their volume, due to increased temperature. When a liquid is heated in a vessel, their molecules move farther apart and due to this the liquid expands and occupy more space. Since, liquids do not have a specific shape, they occupy the shape of the container, thus the expansion of liquids is described in terms of a change in volume.
