Metonymy is after an object denotes to somewhat else that it's diligently associated with, but unlike synecdoche, the portion does not have to denote to the entire, or vice versa.

Synecdoche refers to a small part of the sentence, which brings out the entire meaning of the sentence as a whole. For example : If i ask you : Did you put on a Band - Aid on the cut? Now when i say Band - Aid, it is understood that it is an adhesive tape. This small part of the sentence"Band Aid" brings out the meaning in the whole sentence.
Now Metonymy refers to one thing refers to the other to bring about a relationship between the two. Example : If someone tells you : "You have nice kicks" It originally means that you have nice shoes. But by saying the word kicks, which in turn is done by the shoes (kicking is done by shoes), it explains the meaning of having shoes through the word kicking, which is related to that of a shoe.
shoes kick. So the word kick denotes shoe.
hope it helps.
