DIGESTIVE SYSTEM -
A system which provides nutrition to an organism is known as Digestive System.
It includes -
✓ Ingestion - intake of food.
✓ Digestion - digestion of food.
✓ Absorption - absorption of digested food.
✓ Assimilation - absorption of nutrients.
✓ Egestion - removal of undigested food.
Alimentary Canal of Digestive System -
MOUTH -
It is a transverse passage of alimentary canal to capture the food materials. It contains 32 teeth (in normal adult) and a tongue. It's cavity is known as Oral Cavity or Buccal Cavity. Floor of buccal cavity contains a leaf like muscular organ known as Tongue. It contains several taste buds and helps in mixing of food with saliva as well. Teeth are present in upper and lower jaw which helps in cutting and chewing of food. Roof of buccal cavity is known as Palate.
PHARYNX -
It is a tubular narrow passage present behind the oral cavity. It's posterior end opens into Oesophagus.
OESOPHAGUS -
Gullet (lower opening of pharynx) connected to narrow tubular about 25 cm long Oesophagus. It runs along middle of thorax behind trachea and heart, crosses the diaphragm and connected to Stomach in upper abdominal cavity. It helps in transport of food materials upto Stomach.
STOMACH -
Stomach is a bag like structure situated in upper abdominal cavity at left side. It is divided into four parts. The region where oesophagus opens is known as Cardiac Part, lateral doom shaped Fundus, central part Body or Corpus and the part where Stomach opens into intestine is Pyloric Part. Stomach contains HCl which breaks food into simple absorbable parts and kills microbes came with food. It's wall contains mucus glands. these glands secrets mucus which prevents wall of stomach from HCl.
SMALL INTESTINE -
It is a long tubular structure where complete digestion of food occurs. It is divided into three parts.
1. Duodenun - It's upper part of small intestine, about 25 cm in length.
2. Jejunum - It's middle part of intestine which is about 1.8 to 2.5 m in length.
3. Ileum - It is the lower part of intestine which shows highly coiled structure. it's length is about 2.5 to 4.5 m.
The complete length of small intestine is about 4-6 m. It contains several glands that secrets some enzymes known as Succuc Entericus which helps in digestion. It opens into Caecum of large intestine.
LARGE INTESTINE -
It is about 1.5 m in length.
It's main part is known as Colon. It mainly helps in absorption of water from undigested part of food. It also contains some symbiotic microbes present which helps in release of Vitamin A, B12, Riboflavin etc.
RECTUM -
It is the posterior most part of alimentary canal. It helps in temperorry storage of undigested food. These undigested food expelled out from body through Anus.
ANUS -
It's an opening through which undigested food released out from body. These undigested food are known as Faecal matter.
**************************************************
FUNCTION OF DIGESTIVE SYSTEM -
It breaks complex food materials into simple absorbable parts with the help of Digestive enzymes.
It provides all kind of nutrients from ingested food.

Hope it will help you...
Best of luck...
Thanks !!!
