A computer is an electronic device that can perform complex and long computations very quickly. Initially analog computers were made  using analog electronics. The values at the inputs and the outputs were continuous real numbers. But it was not possible to handle different users requirements with reliability.

A digital computer uses the digital arithmetic and logic that contains only the numbers 0 and 1.  All inputs are converted into binary number system (a combination of 0s and 1s). Computations are done using 0s and 1s only. The results are also in the same format. Finally the outputs are converted into desired format.  That is why it is called digital computer.

A digital computer is very reliable, scalable and fast.  A computer contains a processor chip (ALU) that performs computations on the data stored in a memory device (RAM). Computer inputs data and programs from a storage device called Hard disk. The results of the computations are also stored on the hard disk.

The ALU processor in the computer performs arithmetic and logic operations according to a set of instructions called a program. The programs and the data (values/parameters) are called software.

Examples of digital computers are the personal computers we use at home.

✿ Digital computers are those that operate with information, numerical or otherwise, represented in digital form .

✿ Such computers process data into a digital value (in zeros and ones) .

✿ They give the results with accuracy and at a faster rate, on the other hand a digital computer operates on digital data such as numbers .

✿ The digital computer is made for both general purpose and special purpose .

✿ Special purpose computer is one that is built for a specific application .
