If you add water to acid it forms an extremely concentrated solution of acid initially. So much heat is released that the solution may boil very violently, splashing concentrated acid out of the container and all this because the reaction is exothermic.

Dilution of acid is exothermic reaction. Water should never be added to acid but acid can be added to water for dilution.

PRECAUTIONS:

One should wear safety gloves while holding acid.

Acid should be added to water and not water to the acid. The latter is a highly exothermic reaction and may break the container.

One should wear safety goggles and stay as far apart as possible from the acid.
