Direct speech ☞ Direct speech describes when something is being repeated exactly as it was, ( directly ) usually in between a pair of inverted commas.
Indirect Speech ☞ Indirect speech will still share the same information, but instead of expressing someone's comments or speech by directly repeating them, it involves reporting or describing what was said ( indirectly ).
Look at the following examples :-
Direct Speech: She said to me, “I am writing a letter to my brother.”
Indirect Speech: She told me that she was writing a letter to her brother.
Rules for conversion of Indirect Speech to Direct Speech -
• Use the reporting verb, "say" or "said to" in its correct tense.
• Remove the conjuctions "that, to, if or whether etc".
• Insert quotation marks, question mark, exclamation and full stop, wherever necessary.
• Put a comma before the statement.
General rules for changing direct speech into indirect speech -
• Omit all inverted commas or quotation marks.
• End the sentence with a full stop.
• If the verb inside the inverted commas/quotation marks is in the present tense, change it into the corresponding past tense.
Note :- Reported Speech and Indirect Speech are the same.
