Direct democracy is a form of democracy where people directly take all the decisions and decide the policy of a government. A true direct democracy does not exist in the world. There are various semi-direct democracy tools like referendum, plebiscite etc which are used for some specific decisions like validating a government decision, policy or issues of national importance which require a nod of general public in terms of a “yes” or “no”. Example- The brexit, The Scotland referendum for staying in UK.

In the present political setup and the era we live in, It is not possible to have direct democracy anywhere in the world, let alone India. Some countries do use semi-direct democracy tools sometimes but these have not proven very effective because people's vote is sometimes driven by emotion and sometimes influenced by some leader. One very big such example is the referendum in Columbia against the peace treaty between the government and the rebel group FARC. It took years of hard work by a lot of people to reach the treaty. It even got the president of Columbia the coveted Nobel Peace prize.

It is tough to take rational decisions in a direct democracy. Even the representative democracy, which is the most popular form of democracy right now, sometimes proves a stumbling block in taking revolutionary decisions in a government. It is very tough to make a consensus about anything in present time. So, according to me direct democracy is neither feasible nor beneficial for a country at present time. Semi-direct democratic tools can be used for specific decisions as it is presently used in UK, Switzerland etc.
