• Two quantities are said to be in direct proportion, if the second quantity also increases with an increase in the first quantity. For example, if you go to a market, the cost of fruits is directly proportional with its weight. If you buy more fruits, you have to pay more money.

• Two quantities are said to be in inverse proportion, if the second quantity decreases with an increase in the first quantity. For example, the number of men and the time taken to do the work are inversely proportional. If there are more men, work will be finished in less time.
