Process in which most or nearly all microorganisms (whether or not pathogenic) on clothing, hard surfaces, and/or wounds are killed through the use of chemicals, heat, or ultraviolet rays. Milk, for example, is disinfected by heating up to 100°C for at least 10 seconds to kill most microbes (but not necessarily their spores) to make it more stable than pasteurized milk.
