Splitting of an white light into several colourful light beams by passing the light through an refractive medium is called dispersion of light.

Ex- formation of rainbow.

Dispersion of light means when white light enters into a glass prism... it scatters into 7 colours (i.e VIBGYOR)... It happens because of difference in refractive index in all colours...
