what is Dispersion of light and its cause

When a white light passes through a prism, it gets scattered into 7 constituent colors (VIBGYOR) in increasing order of their wave length. This phenomenon is called Dispersion of light.

This is due to different colored lights have different speed in the prism and different wave length.

dispersion occurs because the refraction of different colors is different..... hence the refractive index of the medium is largest for the violet colour and least for the red colour
