What is dispersion of white light? What is the cause of such dispersion?
Answers
Dispersion of white light is defined as splitting of white light into seven constituent colours when passed through the prism.
Dispersion occurs due to the different degrees of refraction experienced by different colours of light. Light of different colours may travel with the same speed in a vacuum, but they travel at different speeds in some refracting medium. The speed of violet light is relatively lower than that of red light.
....hope it's helpful :)
Explanation:
The splitting up of white light into seven colours on passing through a transparent medium like a glass prism is called dispersion of light.
Cause of dispersion of light:
When light passes through a prism, the different frequencies of light travel at different velocities. Because of refraction, the different velocities make the angles of refraction different, causing the light to travel in slightly different directions.
