Displacement (symbolized d or s ), also called length or distance, is a one-dimensional quantity representing the separation between two defined points. The standard unit of displacement in the International System of Units ( SI ) is the meter (m). Displacement is usually measured or defined along a straight line.

\huge \boxed{\underline{\underline{Displacement}}}

==> The shortest distance covered in a particular direction by a body while moving from one point to another is called its displacement.

●It is a vector quantity since it has both magnitude and direction.

●SI unit of displacement is metre(m)

\huge{\mathfrak{Example}}

Suppose a body travels from a point A to B (3 km) due east and then from B to C (4 km) due north.

The distance travelled by the body is AB + BC = 3 + 4 = 7km

whereas the displacement of the body id

ac =  \sqrt{ab {}^{2} }  +  \sqrt{bc {}^{2} }  \\

 =  \sqrt{3 {}^{2} }  +  \sqrt{4 {}^{2} }

= 5 km due north east.

Now if the body returns to point A from C due south-west , the displacement of the body will be zero whereas the distance travelled will be AB+BC+CA = (3+4+5) = 12km
