Metals (and other substances) can be organised into an Electrochemical Series according to the ability of the metal to lose electrons, or the ease with which ions of the metal gain electrons. A metal that loses electrons relatively easily will react with the ions of another metal that attracts electrons more strongly than the first metal. When this occurs, the first metal is converted into ions of the metal, while the ions of the other metal are converted into the metal. The total number of electrons lost by one metal must be exactly the same as the number of electrons gained by the ions of the other metal. Such reactions are known as 'displacement reactions'. In this activity we study such reactions.

Explanation:

Displacement reaction is a reaction in which more reactive metal dispaces less reactive metal from its salt solution.
