What is distance? How is it different from displacement?

distance is the total path length from initial and final position and displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and and final position. SI unit of both distance and displacement is metre.
Distance is a scalar quantity and displacement is a vector quantity.
Distance can never be 0 or negative but displacement can be 0, negative or positive
eg: In a straight line motion, if a person moves from A to B, then to C and comes back to B, the distance is AB+BC+CB and displacement will be AB
