By -Elections are held if some seats in lik sabha or Vidhan sabhas fall vacant without completing the term due to:
The sitting MLA or MP diedies without completing his/her term.
The sitting MLA/MP resignes from his/her seat.
The sitting MLA/MP is disqualified from holding the seat due to any legality.
The sitting MLA/MP resigns if he has fought another election or fought from two different seats and won both.
Mid-term elections are held for full house not some seats due to:
Sitting government is dismissed by President/governor.
Sitting govt resigns from the house for any reason.
Sitting government fails to prove its majority and no other option is available which can do so. hope this helps u

Mid –term elections: If the central or a state government loses its majority before the completion of its term and the formation of alternate government is not possible, then midterm elections are held.
By-election: If an elected member resigns or dies before completing his/her term, his/her office becomes vacant. Election held to fill that vacant seat is known as by-election
