distortion means

In the nineteenth century, Nicolas Auguste Tissot developed a method to analyze map projection distortion. An infinitely small circle on the earth's surface will be projected as an infinitely small ellipse on any given map projection. The resulting ellipse of distortion, or indicatrix, shows the amount and type of distortion at the location of the ellipse.

Answer:

  • Map projection. In cartography, a distortion is the misrepresentation of the area or shape of a feature. There are no map projections that can maintain a perfect scale throughout the entire projection because they are taking a sphereoid and forcing it onto a flat surface.02-Oct-2017
