In plate tectonics divergent plate boundary is a linear feature that exists between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.

  • “Divergent plate boundaries” are areas where plates are moving endlessly from each other.  
  • This happens above rising convection flows. The “rising current pushes” up on the base of the lithosphere, lifting it and streaming horizontally underneath it.  
  • This parallel stream causes the plate material above to be hauled along toward stream.
  • At the peak of the rising, the overlying plate is extended slim, breaks and pulls separated.

For example: A submarine mountain range is Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
