DNA FINGER PRINTING

  • The technique which is used to identify the similarities of DNA fragments of two individuals is called DNA finger printing.

  • It was first developed by Alec Jeffreys, to take DNA finger print which is a major portion of DNA.

  • It consists of non coding sequences called repetitive sequences.

  • The repetitive sequences vary from person to person.

  • These repeating sequences are also called VNTR (Variable Number Tandem Repeats) is isolated from blood, hair or semen.

  • It is treated with restriction enzyme (Restriction endonuclease) to cut the repetitive DNA into fragments.

Applications Of DNA Finger Printing

1. It is used powerful forensic tool to solve the problem of paternity, murder etc.

2. It is used in diagnosis of genetic diseases.

Applications :-

  • This technique is used to derive the conclusions in several criminal cases.

  • This technique is used to establish paternity in cases where there is confusion regarding such matters.

  • This technique can be used to track out the blood relatives of a person.
