The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities.

The main functions of DNS is to be translate domain names into IP Addresses, which computers can understand. It also provides a list of mail servers with accept Emails for each domain names. Each domain name in DNS will nominate set of name servers to be authoritative for its DNS records.
