The policy of Doctrine of Lapse was introduced by Lord Dalhousie who was the British governor-general of East India company in India from 1848 to 1856.
This policy was to play major role in British expansion in india.
Under this policy, when the Indian rulers dies without leaving their own hier then the teritory would be taken by British. This policy was already implemented before by British court of director in 1834 and some states like Punjab, Surat and Kullu,etc.
