The doctrine of lapse was a policy of annexation initiated by the East India Company in the Indian subcontinent in relation to the princely states, and applied until 1859, two years after Company rule was succeeded by the British Raj.

Doctrine of lapse was a policy that was introduced by Lord Dalhousie who was the Governor - General from 1848 to 1856.
Under this policy if an Indian ruler died without a male heir his kingdom would lapse that is it will become a part of the Company's territory.
The places which were simply annexed by applying the lapse were:-
Satara
Sambalpur
Udaipaur
Nagpur
Jhansi
