Doctrine of lapse was a policy that was introduced by Lord Dalhousie who was the Governor - General from 1848 to 1856.

Under this policy if an Indian ruler died without a male heir his kingdom would lapse that is it will become a part of the Company's territory.

The places which were simply annexed by applying the lapse were:-

Satara

Sambalpur

Udaipaur

Nagpur

Jhansi
