Doctrine of lapse introduced by Lord Dalhousie.He was determined to extend direct  rule over as large area as possible to facilitate a larger market for British goods.For this he used a policy of 'Doctrine of Lapse'.According to it,when a ruler of a subsidiary state died without a natural heir to the throne,his territory would lapse or pass into British hands.Many states like..Satara,Nagpur and Jhansi were annexed under this policy.
