Doctrine of lapse introduced by Lord Dalhousie. He was determined to extend direct rule over as large area as possible to facilitate a larger market for British goods. For this he used a policy of 'Doctrine of Lapse'.According to it,when a ruler of a subsidiary state died without a natural heir to the throne, his territory would lapse or pass into British hands. Many states like..Satara,Nagpur and Jhansi were annexed under this policy.
