Answer:

Doctrine of Lapse

According to this, any princely state that was under the direct or indirect control of the East India Company where the ruler did not have a legal male heir would be annexed by the company. As per this, any adopted son of the Indian ruler could not be proclaimed as heir to the kingdom.

Doctrine of Lapse is the policy which was introduced by Lord Dalhousie. According to this the kingdom which do not have a male heir was taken away by British. Male heir cannot be a adopted son. So, British has taken away Jhasi by imposing Doctrine of Lapse. Then Rani Laxmi Bai rise against the British because she wanted that her adopted son would become the heir of her kingdom.
