The Doppler effect is the change in frequency or wavelength of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the wave source. ... A common example of Doppler shift is the change of pitch heard when a vehicle sounding a horn approaches and recedes from an observer.

The phenomenon of apparent change in the frequency of sound whenever there is a relative motion between the source of the sound and the observer , is called Doppler Effect.
