A dorsal vessel is the major structural component of an insect's circulatory system. This tube runs longitudinally through the thorax and abdomen, along the inside of the dorsal body wall. In most insects, it is a fragile, membranous structure that collects hemolymph in the abdomen and conducts it forward at the head
The dorsal blood vessel is present at upper side of earthworm and runs along the length of earthworm. Dorsal blood vessels are also known as true heart of earthworm. It is distributive in segments 1-13 and main collecting vessels in the segments 14 onwards.
It has pair of valves internally in each segment which check the back flow of blood.
It is visible as a dark line from thin and semi transparent body wall of earthworm.
It is the thickest blood vessels having contractile muscular walls.
