Double fertilization is the process of fusion of more than two gametic cells.
- Double fertilization consists of the fusion of one male gamete with a female ova and the fusion of the second male gamete with the secondary nucleus.
- Out of the two male gametes, one of the male gametes will undergo normal fertilization that involves the fusion of the male gamete with the female ova.
- This is known as syngamy or generative fertilization.
- The second male gamete will fuse with two haploid polar nuclei or diploid secondary nucleus. This results in the formation of triploid.
- This is known as triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). eg. endosperm cell.
