dowary or dahej( in Hindi language ) is an act of giving bribe in weddings
The parents of the bride are forced to give an asset like: a car, cash(5laks,10laks etc..) , gold etc to the groom's side.
Government took many initiatives to end dowary. they succeeded in many parts of the urban areas but in the rural areas still in many places dowary is followed.

The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961
the dowry means the property or cash which is given to the bridegroom family by brides family.
It became a social evil and brides were beaten and torched to get money form parents.
this act punishes with imprisonment.
under section 304B and 498A
