Industrial firms that are engaged in the process to create a finished or different product from the  the output of other firms (which are at the previous level of material processing) are known as downstream industries. For example  plastic manufacturers whose inputs come from petroleum processors, and agro processors whose inputs come from farmers or growers. Downstream industries are often more stable and have higher profit margins than the upstream (raw material producing) industries
