During Bhabha's times, there was no establishment in India where experiments ad projects related to nuclear physics, cosmic rays, high energy physical particles, etc. could be taken up. India did not have the necessary facilities for this. He thus wrote a proposal to Dorabji Tata Trust regarding this which they accepted to start the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Due to some future problems, there could no longer be prolonged studies here which prompted him to write to the government, resulting in the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET). Thus, he laid the foundation for atomic research in India.

Homi Bhabha is best known for his contributions to cosmic radiation and quantum theory. It was under his guidance that Indian scientists first developed an atomic bomb. However, he was against the manufacturing of this bomb although the country had sufficient resources to do so. Dr Bhabha also spearheaded the operation of the first atomic reactant in 1956 in Mumbai. He also derived an expression for the probability of electrons scattering positrons.
