The duodenum is the first and shortest segment (5-7 m) of the small intestine found in most vertebrates, especially higher ones.It is found from the pylorus of the stomach to the duodeno-jejunal junction.

Its name has been derived from the
Latin word duodenum digitorum meaning twelve fingers length.
 
It is the
part of the small intestine which receives partially digested food from the stomach and begins the process of absorption of nutrients.

It has been
divided into four parts:- superior, descending, inferior and ascending.
