dy/dx specifically means that you are differentiating y with respect to x. Y again can be anything. The chain rule is important. ... If you perform this operator on specific function say y=f(x),then dy/dxgives you the change in 'y' with respect to change in 'x'.also dy/dxis the slope of the graph plotted 'y' vs 'x'.

dy / dx are a way of saying an infinitely small change in x. dy/dx is same as delta y/delta x, which is same as slope . in integration dx is used to show what variable you integrating with respect to dy
