The early Nationalists arose after the failure of the revolt of 1857. They established various small and regional political organisations like Poona Association in 1867, Indian League in 1875 etc. They came together and formed the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1885. The early phase of INC is also called as the early nationalist phase or Moderate Phase. They genuinely believed that the British government in India was a boon for us to develop the society and modernise the people. Their belief was to plea and submit petitions for their demands and participation in the government would bring change. Alas! They were mistaken. That is why in 1907, Surat Split happened and those who had an Extremist thinking and negative belief about the British were expelled from INC.
The Early Nationalists' features :

1. The nationalists in Moderate Phase complained of India's growing poverty and economic backwardness and the failure of modern industry and agricultural growth.

2. They believed in England's providential mission in India.

3. Their ideological inspiration came from western liberal thought and European history.

4. They believed that a political connection with England was in India's social, political and cultural interest.

5. They professed loyalty to the British Crown.

6. They demanded Constitutional Reforms and participation of Indians in Civil Services.

7. They insisted on the use of constitutional methods only.

8. They believed any movement or agitation should be very limited to middle class intelligentsia. They didn't have faith in the capacity of the masses to participate in politics and to make sacrifices.
