Ecosystem:-

Ecosystem is the system in which both living and non-living components interact with each other which mainly occurs by the means of biogeochemical cycles and food chains. Ecosystem is also known as ecological system.

Components of an Ecosystem:-

Abiotic Components:-

The non-living components of an ecosystem are known as Abiotic resources.

Abiotic resources are classified into three categories:-

(i) Inorganic Materials:- These are present in material cycles. e.g. \sf{O_2}, \sf{H_2O}, etc.

(ii) Organic Components:- These are present in dead organic matter and include lipids, proteins, etc.

(iii) Climatic and edaphic factors:- Climatic factors include physical factors of environment such as light, wind, etc. The edaphic factors are soil factors.

Biotic Components:-

The living components of the environment are knwon as Biotic resources.

Biotic resources are classified into two categories:-

(i) Autotrophic components:- These components include organisms that are capable of producing their own food. E.g.:- Plants, cyanobacteria, photosynthetic bacterias.

(ii) Heterotrophic components:- These components include organisms that are dependent on other organisms for their food. E.g.:- Human beings, animals, etc.
