the needle of a compass is itself a magnet and thus the north pole of the magnet always point North ,except when it is near a strong magnet .

when a bar magnet brought near compass needle it deflects in such a way that is south pole pointing towards north pole of magnet and its north pole pointing towards south pole pole of magnet.
