El Nino is an abnormal warming of ocean surface waters in the Eastern tropical Pacific ocean off the coast of Ecuador and Peru in South America.
The waters off the West Coast of South America are normally very cold, but every 3 to 7 years during the month of December and January, the temperature of surface water in the region shows an abnormal rise in several degrees, leading to a disruption of the local weather pattern and disappearance of fish in the affected region.
El Nino is also known to affect weather in distant places including India's monsoon rainfall.
